Welcome

Welcome to Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School. This marvelous institution has been educating children since 1947. We are a coeducational, PreKindergarten through eighth grade school in the heart of Midtown Memphis. While we are anchored in the historic Central Gardens neighborhood, our students come to us not only from midtown but from communities around the Mid-South.  Our well-earned reputation of preparing confident learners and good citizens is known throughout the city and larger community.

As a leading independent school in the city of Memphis, it is our mission to prepare students to become creative problem solvers, lifelong learners, and responsible citizens of their communities and the world. We work hard to live intentionally and purposefully into that mission statement at each level of the school. Our NAEYC- accredited Miss Lee’s Preschool offers a play-based curriculum that encourages children to seek solutions to various challenges, be they academic, social, or emotional. In Lower School (grades SK-4), we begin our character development program and foster leadership through partnerships with younger students.  Our curricula is intentionally selected and taught to foster critical thinking skills, even at the elementary level.  Our Middle School program (grades 5-8) develops the whole child—on academic, social, emotional, and physical levels—for the rigors of high school. By fostering independence through leadership opportunities and high academic standards, our students graduate fully prepared for the challenges of high school.

On GSL’s Importance

GSL holds so many memories for me. I enrolled in 1974 as a Junior Kindergarten student and continued on there for a total of 11 years. When you are enrolled at the same school for that long, it becomes part of who you are, and each and every memory is precious. Students are encouraged to "try on" many different experiences from the arts to athletics, which allow for a diverse experience both in and out of the classroom. Leadership opportunities abound and each child is treated as an individual who is loved and appreciated. The education at GSL is an extraordinary gift that stands the test of time.

A GSL graduate is more than just a student ready for the next level. GSL graduates are grounded in their experience here, anchored in a loving, caring community for life. This knowledge empowers them to leave our school and chart an exciting path into high school, college, and beyond.  Our alumni attend high schools throughout Memphis and we regularly hear about their involvement and leadership in academic organizations, sports teams, school plays, and other extracurricular pursuits. Our program gives them the roots needed to succeed and the wings that help them soar.

I encourage you to watch the video posted below. It does a wonderful job of articulating the many reasons to select a school with a PK-8th grade configuration. It was produced for us by the Elementary Schools Research Collaborative, a nationwide consortium of leading independent elementary schools, of which GSL is a member. The video highlights the variety of ways in which a PK-8th grade school is uniquely positioned to nurture and develop students in this age cohort.

We thank you for your interest in GSL. Please explore our website and see what we have to offer. I encourage you to call our admissions office to schedule a tour. We are an exciting, vibrant community and I look forward to seeing you on campus!
