Laban Carrick Hill (’75), the author of the 2004 National Book Award Finalist Harlem Stomp! A Cultural History of the Harlem Renaissance, visited GSL in March to talk to 7th and 8th graders about his book research and other career highlights. Hill has taught writing at Columbia University, Baruch College, and St. Michael’s College in Vermont.
   
 

Greg Dodge (’79) stopped by the GSL offices to say hello this spring; he is the district sales manager for Yellow Book in Knoxville. His older siblings Herbie and Jennifer also live in Knoxville; younger sister Stephanie (’81) lives in Chattanooga.

   
 

Talented Memphis keyboardist, singer and songwriter Charlie Wood (’82) has been featured in both the Commercial Appeal and Memphis Magazine in recent months. He has recently retired from 16 years of performing on Beale Street but continues to record in his home studio and perform throughout the area with the Charlie Wood Trio.

Parker-Leigh Juby (’94) attended high school in Seattle after leaving GSL, and graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham. She is studying to be a nurse, and when she is not skiing, hiking, or mountain climbing, she can occasionally be found lounging in her vintage GSL PE shorts. (photo)

   
 

Logan Taylor (’95), Justin Taylor and John Burruss (’95) coached the 5th grade boys basketball team, who won the 2007 PAA championship. Remember dodgeball? Some GSL alums just couldn’t get enough, and formed their own adult team—named “Last Pick”—which has been featured on the local news and in the Commercial Appeal. Rhodes College freshman Andrew Alexander (’02) made the varsity tennis team and the Dean’s List. His older brother Ben Alexander (’99) is the Senior Class President at Rhodes, alumni chair for SAE and a member of the SAE chapter’s intramural sports hall of fame. He also plays on the varsity tennis team and serves in the Student Senate.

   
 

Matt Dowling ('02) made the Dean's List at Furman University and Donald McClure ('02) made the Dean's List at Washington University in St. Louis. 

     
 

Louise Smythe (’02) attends Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY, and won the GSL alumni award in the school’s annual 5K in memory of long-time administrative assistant Lisa Lassandrello. (photo)

   
 

Ken Haltom (’03) received an academic scholarship from UT and will run track and cross country in the fall.

     
 

St. Agnes senior Ariel Laws (’03) has been accepted into Agnes Scott in Decatur, Georgia.

     
 

Hutchison senior Litsey Corona (’03) is a National Merit Scholarship Program semi-finalist.

     
 

Marshall Bartlett (’03) received a $1,000 stipend to attend a national American Junior Academy of Science conference in San Francisco based on research conducted at USM last summer for the Mississippi Academy of Science conference.

     
 

MUS senior Stewart Gray (’03) was featured in the Commercial Appeal in February as one of First Tennessee’s Academic All-Stars. Gray is a member of Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the History Honor Society. He is on the Knowledge Master and Quiz Bowl teams, and serves as a Student Ambassador. Gray has also helped run the 4- and 5-year-old basketball teams at GSL Church.

   
 

St. Mary’s junior Sloane Metcalf (’04) was inducted into the National Honor Society.

   
 

Katelyn Nichols (’05) had actress Ashley Tisdale’s role as Sharpay Evans in the wildly popular version of Disney’s High School Musical presented by DeSoto Family Theatre this spring.
     
 

The 2005-2006 8th-grade basketball team enjoyed a reunion dinner hosted by Coach Michael Dibbert after an MUS-Briarcrest game this winter, complete with a surprise appearance by Coach Kohlhof and Mr. Kvande.

     
 

Grayson Magruder (’05) made the MUS lacrosse team and Austin Magruder (’06) made the MUS baseball team.

   
 

MUS freshmen Will Taylor (’06) and Blake Anderson (’06) were inducted into the National Latin Honor Society, and Daniel Wood (’06) made the eight-man tennis team. Mitchell Thompson, Mathieu Baker, Travis Nauert (all ’06 grads) made the 9th – grade basketball team at MUS. Will Taylor was the 9th grade basketball student coach, and also a member of the MUS track team, along with Elliott Bryant (’06) and Collin Thomas.

     
 

Lausanne freshman Elspeth Sweatman (’06) made the All West Tennessee Honor Band 2007, as well as the 2007 University of Memphis Honor Band. She was also inducted into the National Latin Honor Society. 

   
  The Alumni Ambassador Award for the Class of 2007 was given to Wallace Ann Sorrells. Her task is to be the liaison between her classmates (wherever they may roam) and the GSL Alumni Board.
