7th Grade

To encourage healthy relationships in the 7th grade, I shall...
1. avoid gossip - period! I shall stay out of things that aren’t my business.
2. always deal face-to-face in conversations containing feelings and emotions, and save online conversations for neutral topics. I will avoid using online tools to say things I wouldn’t say face-to-face.
3. be kind and respectful to all. I will practice the habit of speaking to everyone.
4. be honest in everything, especially my feelings and emotions.
5. remove the following from my vocabulary:
“JK”... ”Awkward”... ”Retarded”... homophobic insults... swear/cuss words or inappropriate language... sarcasm
6. write, say, and do only those things I am comfortable being made public.
7. balance time with all my friends and let others do the same. I shall try to understand if a friend needs space.
8. respect personal property, especially another’s cell phone and text messages.
9. recognize that I can only control myself. I will resist the urge to try to control others.
10. behave appropriately, both online and off, recognizing I am a LUKER!
Welcome to 7th grade! This year includes a variety of new privileges and responsibilities as boys and girls move into their final two years of Middle School at GSL. One change involves foreign language study, with students deciding whether to continue pursuing Spanish or begin coursework in Latin. Seventh graders improve their study skills by working through the challenge of exams and have the opportunity to serve in leadership roles on the Student Council and earn Honor Society distinction. Important 7th grade traditions include the creation of the class banner and the fantastic year-end class trip to Chicago. Seventh graders may also serve as acolytes, are invited to attend the Athletic Banquet for the first time, and have the chance to enjoy the 7th-8th grade dance. It's a significant passage in their educational journey as they begin to prepare for their graduating year at GSL.
Seventh Grade Commandments
This year in advisory, Mrs. Hendry and Ms. Attinger led the 7th grade girls in an impromptu series of conversations about themselves, their evolving relationships with each other, and the fact that they feel they are in "a good place" this year. The conversations were unusually rich and productive, so on impulse, they did some brainstorming about what's been working, and why. Before they knew it, they found themselves creating a set of commandments reflecting their best practices for maintaining healthy relationships with one another.

They were so proud of the results they created a poster, called "Commandments for a Seventh Grade Girl to Live By," and posted copies strategically around the middle school to inspire others. The girls also presented their commandments to the other middle school girls in chapel and received a standing ovation. See their commandments at right; an impressive list that can serve as an inspiration and model for everyone - boys, girls, and adults alike.
