Arts

Creativity flourishes at GSL, and students are given a variety of avenues for artistic development through classes in art, music, and theatre. Our fine arts program is not an elective choice, but an important component of every single student's education. Individual artistic expression is valued and supported here, and we are proud to serve an exceedingly creative school community.

Early art and music instruction begins at the Preschool in age-appropriate forms through classroom activities and special subject teaching. It begins to take more defined shape as part of regular curriculum instruction in Lower School, and evolves even further in Middle School.

Visual Art

Student artwork adorns the halls of GSL year-round. Our goal is to instill the joy of creating, while helping each student build confidence, hone creative skills, and view art as a form of discovery, invention and communication.

In Lower School, SK-4th grade students have art every week with Anna Chahal (GSL Class of '00). The program is designed to introduce a wide range of materials, art techniques, and artists, in hopes of reaching each child with something that will inspire. There's often an interdisciplinary component, with projects supporting other areas of classroom study.

In Middle School, students build portfolios with instructor Lee Schaffler. They begin by learning basic drawing skills, and ultimately work with paint, watercolors, oil pastels, and more. Printmaking is a big focus, and students also create digital works. And everyone gets to experience having their work displayed during the Art Shows held at the end of each trimester.

Students of all ages study a variety of artists and styles and use a range of materials such as paint, clay, collage, and recyclables. Sometimes they work on group projects, like the Diamond Jubilee piece on the 2nd floor that was created for the school's 75th Anniversary in 2022.

Music

SK-6th grade students have music instruction under the guidance of instructor Braden Jensen, whose music degrees include special training in Orff Schulwerk.

Students experience Orff Music instruction in a variety of ways, including through pitched and unpitched percussion work, folk dancing, songs, and games. The sounds of drums, glockenspiels, and singing fill the spacious music classroom as students learn about rhythm, beat, movement, composition, improvisation, and music notation.

Students polish playing skills in the classroom and proudly display what they've learned in annual school musical and instrumental performances for classmates and families.

Performing Arts

Our Performing Arts program supports diverse classes in the performing arts, in addition to two major Middle School stage productions and a performance lab each year.

Taught by veteran Performing Arts instructor Leslie Reddick, Middle School students rotate through different areas of emphasis in the performing and creative arts, including oral interpretation; creative movement and dance; history of theater; and presenting "senior" speeches as 8th graders.

Classwork is designed to help students build their self-confidence, develop an appreciation for the performing arts, and refine their presentation skills. In the annual fall and spring Middle School productions, students audition for roles; create sets and costumes; and learn how to run sound and lights. Through it all they are given the opportunity to showcase their talents and push their creativity to new heights.

GSL also supports a chapter of the International Thespian Society Junior Thespians #88798, for which inductions are held each spring. Thespian Awards are bestowed twice a year to selected cast and crew for outstanding work and professionalism during the spring and fall productions.

Performing Arts Booster Club

Founded in 2012, the Performing Arts Booster Club (Luker's Troupers) was created to help support the efforts of the Performing Arts program at GSL. The Performing Arts Department stages two major Middle School productions annually, in addition to hosting an annual Performance Lab for young actors who want to further develop their talent. The school is also home to a chapter of the International Junior Thespian Society.

We hope that you will join in the growing number of individuals and local businesses who help make our productions successful by becoming a member and/or advertising in our show programs. By supporting the Graceā€St. Luke's Episcopal School Performing Arts program, you are demonstrating support of theater, families and our community. What a great way to give back to the arts at GSL!
