Food Insecurity - Grades SK and 5

Food insecurity is a very real concern that affects an estimated 1 in 8 children in America. By learning about food insecurity, GSL students are gaining empathy for others and learning how to help those in need.

SK Thanksgiving Meal

When: November

What: SK and 3rd grade reading buddies collaborate to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for a family in need. Each SK class makes two large dishes to create a Thanksgiving feast.

Curriculum: A representative from a local non-profit speaks to the students about the program which serves at-risk youth.  Students learn about food insecurity through this presentation, children’s literature, and the 5th grade can food drive. When: November

What: Fifth grade is supported by the entire school with their canned food drive. They collected canned goods to benefit the GSL church food pantry, as well as the Memphis Food Bank.

Curriculum: Starting early in the school year, fifth grade visits the GSL food pantry twice a week to count and sort cans to help them gain a better understanding of food insecurity and how they can help. Closer to the food drive, they make posters and announcements during chapel to advertise the event.  Afterwards, they apply math skills to sort and count the number of cans donated. Finally, they make a slideshow presentation to present during Celebration chapel.
