Studio Art
Student art adorns every hallway at GSL, and children are encouraged to express themselves creatively in a variety of ways. Students in grades SK-8 receive weekly art instruction from studio art teachers and artists Carol Buchman (Lower School) and Lee Schaffler (Middle School). Instructors focus on developing the artistic skills of each individual student with projects that are age-appropriate for every level. Students learn about sculpture, drawing, and painting through work with acrylic, pastels, watercolors, clay, papier-mache, linoleum blocks, and much more. In Middle School, students hold an art show every trimester to display work they’ve done in class. Our students’ art pieces are regularly honored at the Mid-South Fair and other local art competitions, and many alumni go on to earn high school recognition in the Scholastic Art Awards held annually at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
